Operations & Business Manager
: The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine includes 8,000 faculty members, 850 staff, and 6,900 students enrolled in undergraduate medicine, postgraduate medicine, and professional and doctoral graduate programs. It has nine fully affiliated hospitals and 18 community-affiliated hospitals and health facilities. The Faculty of Medicine and its fully affiliated hospitals are also a thriving research enterprise — one of the largest in North America — that includes one-fifth of all health and biomedical Canada Research Chairs and has attracted $809 million in research funding (2013-14). In 2015, the National Taiwan University Ranking placed U of T first in Canada and third in the world; the Faculty of Medicine was also third in the world in the sub-category of clinical medicine.
An exciting opportunity exists in the Department of Anesthesia for a skilled professional to provide effective and efficient planning and management of all matters related to finances, human resources facilities, and information technology. The incumbent will also be involved in strategic planning for the department and provide senior level advice and support on projects related to the teaching and research goals and mission of the department. This is a highly collaborative position that requires extensive contact with the University’s affiliated teaching hospitals.
Under the direction of the Chair, specific duties and responsibilities include: 1) developing strategic initiatives and processes to improve the overall administration of the department; 2) managing all aspects of the department’s finances, including operating budgets, research grants, conference accounts, funds, cost-recoverable activities and endowments; 3)
recommending fiscal strategies to achieve the goals of the department and requirements ; 4) managing the department’s operational resources; 5) recruiting and managing all administrative staff and advising the Chair on necessary staff resources to fulfill the mandate of the department; 6) creating, maintaining, assessing and documenting policies and procedures relevant to the Department; 7) managing the administration of various contracts with practice plans and local hospitals; and 8)developing and maintaining effective working relationships with physician leaders and staff in the affiliated hospitals to produce collaborative and innovative success in the various programs offered;
: (MINIMUM)
Education:
University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Formal business and/or accounting training a strong asset.
Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in progressively responsible administrative roles, preferably in a University of hospital setting. Significant management experience in a relatively small but complex environment requiring flexibility and a creative problem solving approach for resolving issues. In depth knowledge of financial accounting principles, including experience in complex budgeting and forecasting. Experience supporting strategic planning initiatives a strong asset.
Skills:
Excellent computer skills including MS Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Internet and database Applications. Knowledge of the University of Toronto’s Administrative Management System (AMS), including the Financial Information System (FIS) and the Human Resources Information System (HRIS) an asset.

Working knowledge of policies and procedures of University of Toronto and their application within the Faculty of Medicine is a strong asset.
