Director, Strategic Market Development

The role of the Director, Strategic Market Development is to adopt and develop a leading edge, Market Development model which consists of embracing real world best-in-class practices and incorporating a redesign of structure, process, systems, incentives, metrics, and rhythms, with a view of driving incremental revenue in the areas of strategic and emerging products and technology. The incumbent will be responsible for leading the development and execution of the portfolio of top priority Market Development plans in partnership with BU and Canada leadership. He/she will be ultimately be responsible for the Return on Investment for the strategic market development portfolio.    

       

MAIN JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in partnership with BU market development leaders, standardize and develop Access/MD plans (short term & long term), leveraging the PAA process, market & financial data, competitor & industry trends (as per prioritization model).
  • Develop and drive experienced cross functional networks.
  • Adhere to a rapid-cycle model – iterative hypothesis/target/metric system for Canada’s top priorities.
  • Exploit the experiential learning and feedback systems for participants, with aligned goals and incentives.
  • Create experiential learning and cross BU sharing of best practices.  
  • Track, share and implement Market Development Best Practices from around the globe, internal and external to Medtronic.
  • Engage senior level sponsorship and oversight by the Canadian Leadership Team.
  • Select the right health system/gov’t partners to create the coalitions required to drive solid, credible campaigns.
  • Assist market development teams in leveraging internal resources to deliver on Access/MD plans and campaigns, including sales, marketing, legal, regulatory, health economics, government and public relations expertise.
  • Coordinate efforts of key external stakeholders, including patients and patient groups, physicians, and other health system leaders.
  • Develop accountabilities & metrics to evaluate effectiveness of campaign.
  • Monitor and evaluate campaigns; recommend changes and advise on best practices
  • Monitor activities of key competitors.
  • Anticipate future changes in market trends and competitor behavior; assess the impact on existing campaigns/strategies.            
  • Prepare and report (with teams) to CLT & Operating Team on a quarterly basis or as designated to demonstrate progress on all plans and campaigns – discuss challenges and provide appropriate recommendations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, government, political science or related field.
  • Health system and government affairs acumen.

JOB EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 7 to 10 years’ experience in the field of market development or other relevant experience.
  • Solid experience working in a matrix organization or leading cross-functional initiatives.    
  • Experience working with decision makers at multiple levels of healthcare institutions, government authorities and advocacy groups.

  • Proven record of critical thinking and sound decision-making.
  • Good results track record and ability to drive accountability around soft and hard metrics.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.  

DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION

  • Masters degree is an asset.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Competent in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other relevant software programs.
  • Ability to create long term strategic plans with solid tactical execution plans.
