Position Summary:
Reporting to the Unit Manager, Medical Surgical Unit and under the supervision of the Chief of Staff in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s Delegation on Controlled Acts policy, the Physician Assistant (PA) provides medical care to patients within this scope of practice. Major responsibilities may include providing advice and consultation, data gathering, interviewing patients and their caregivers, conducting physical examinations, ordering medical investigations, and providing patient treatment based on medical directives.
The PA participates in departmental and hospital-wide activities that model and promote a safe and healthy patient-centered environment, and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives, in keeping with the mission of the organization.
Requirements:
Education/Specific Training Requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited education program for physician assistants and certified as a Physician Assistant by the Canadian Academy of Physician Assistants, or
- Internationally Trained Medical Graduate who have graduated from a Canadian Medical Association (CMA) accredited PA program or Accredited Review Commission (ARC-PA) accredited program and have taken the PA Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) PA Entry to Practice Certification Examination (PA CERT EXAM) and have met the following criteria:
- Proof of medical degree from a program listed in the WHO/FAIMER directory
- Language proficiency
- Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam
- Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part 1
- IMG-Ontario Clinical Exam 1 (CE1) (Practical) – ability to practice if score is 450 or above
- Completion of IMG-integration process
Required Certification
· Successful completion of the Canadian Physician Assistant certification exam
· BCLS
· ACLS
· NRP
Preferred Certification
· PALS
· ATLS
· TWCC
· Advanced Airway Management course
Relevant Experience
- Experience with shared decisions-making and leadership techniques
- Demonstrated expertise in in decision-making and evidence –based practice
- Effective problem solving skills
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Creative and flexible problem solving and crucial thinking skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in in a collaborative practice model with an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrated change management skills.
- Demonstrated skills in adult and paediatric physical and mental health assessment
- Demonstrated clinical knowledge in performance and interpretation of:
- ECGs
- IV therapy and venipuncture
- Suturing above the facia
- Performance of minor procedures
- Defibrillation, cardioversion and external pacing
- Removal of foreign bodies
- Wound care (including irrigation and debridement)
- Casting and splinting of fractures
- Good attendance and availability required
