About This Job
Physician Assistants are leaders on the Navy’s health-care delivery team. Playing an integral role, they:
Work hand in hand with supervising physicians and surgeons
Provide many services that civilian physicians provide
Handle primary-care issues or pursue a specific surgical subspecialty
Oversee other members of the medical team
Train in emerging need areas, such as emergency medicine, rural medicine and family practice
As a PA in the Navy Medical Service Corps, you will help care for Sailors, Marines and their families. You may also have the chance to assist in Navy medical relief missions worldwide.
You will:
Obtain medical histories
Perform comprehensive exams
Treat minor injuries
Interpret lab tests and X-rays
Counsel patients, providing detailed instructions for home-care procedures
Prescribe medications
Carry out treatment plans
To qualify for Active Duty employment consideration as a Physician Assistant in the Navy Medical Service Corps, you must meet these basic requirements:
Be a U.S. citizen currently practicing in the U.S.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Completion of a physician assistant education program approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA)
Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Be willing to serve a minimum of three years of Active Duty
Be between the ages of 18 and 41
Be in good physical condition and pass a full medical examination
General qualifications may vary depending upon whether you intend to serve Active Duty or Reserve Duty, and whether you are currently serving, have served before or have never served before.

Upon graduation from graduate school, those pursuing a Physician Assistant position are required to attend Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, R.I. ODS is a five-week program that provides a comprehensive and intense introduction to the responsibilities of Navy Staff Corps Officers. Here they learn about the military structure of the U.S. Navy, its rich history of traditions and customs, leadership development and military etiquette.
Promotion opportunities are regularly available but competitive and based on performance.
Navy Clinical Care Providers work in military hospitals and clinics in the U.S., overseas, aboard ships and with Special Operations units.
As a PA, you could work at one of the highly acclaimed National Naval Medical Centers in Bethesda, Md.; Portsmouth, Va.; and San Diego, Calif. Or you could provide support aboard an aircraft carrier or one of two dedicated hospital ships: the USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy.
