To provide athletic therapy services to assigned teams, contributing to the integrated health and performance care of UBC Athletes.
The athletic therapist role is approximately 50% clinical and 50% on-field coverage. The clinical role involves assessing and treating injured athletes from UBC varsity sports using current athletic therapy practices.

On-field first aid and athlete care in the daily training environment and games for select sports (ie. football, rugby and hockey among others). Additional duties include but are not limited to training, supervision and mentorship of student trainers, collaborating with integrated support team staff (Strength and Conditioning, Dietetics, Medicine, Physiotherapy, Psychology), working with coaches and return to play decisions.
The objectives are to provide opportunities for UBC Varsity athletes to develop to their fullest potential as student-athletes.

Organizational Status |
|

|
Reports to the Head Therapist and Coordinator of trainer services and is ultimately responsible to the Athletics Director of Performance and Team Services. |

Work Performed |
|
|
|
|
– Provide athletic therapy services for varsity athletes and work with therapy team to develop rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
– Implementation of up-to-date injury assessment programs such as the Axon Concussion Management System
– Provide on-field first aid for athletic injuries including injury assessment, basic emergency life support, and management of acute traumatic injuries.
– Implement protocols for dealing with injured athletes during competition
– Assess and treat injuries and conditions, using contemporary rehabilitative techniques, therapeutic modalities, soft tissue mobilization, physical reconditioning, and supportive strapping procedures to promote an environment conducive to optimal healing in preparing student-athletes for safe return to competition
– Liaise as part of the therapy team including other UBC Athletic Therapists, physiotherapists in the Allan McGavin Clinic and varsity team doctors
– Liaise with Integrated support team staff to support a proactive health care model
– Assist Coordinator of Varsity Trainer Services to ensure pre-season medical evaluation of varsity athletes are completed
– Maintain medical supplies and equipment
– Supervising student trainers for varsity teams
– Assist student trainers to implement sport injury/illness reporting system
– Administering on-site medical and first aid coverage for varsity and special events
– Assists Coordinator of Varsity Trainer Services with the student athletic training program including student education and ongoing supervision.
– Participate in Integrated Support Team meetings and initiatives
– Other duties may be substituted as required. |

Consequence of Error/Judgement |
|
|
|
|
Consequences of error would include delay in athlete injury management and ability to return to competition and thus potential impacts upon personal health of that athlete, team performance, increased physiotherapy costs and increased costs in medical supplies. |

Qualifications |
|
|
|
|
CATA certified; Advanced First Aid Training, AED and CPR Certification, personal malpractice insurance; Extensive experience in care and prevention of athletic injuries including experience working with elite level athletes in a team environment. Positive attitude, strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills. Athletic background or high performance history an asset. Strength and Conditioning experience and certifications are an asset. Experience in an integrated health care team is an asset. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment, get along and work well with members of the department, supervisors and other employees of the university. .
