Reporting to the Executive Director, Central and Southern Alberta Sector Medical Affairs, the Director, Calgary Zone Medical Affairs works in close partnership with the Calgary Zone Medical Director. The Director is responsible for the local development, implementation and management of Medical Affairs strategies and functions in keeping with provincial policies, guidelines and standards. This includes, but is not limited to: physician workforce planning/recruitment; administrative management of zone medical leadership structures; clinical coverage programs; academic and clinical alternative relationship plans, and clinical and administrative physician contracts, compensation; management of the Calgary Zone Medical Affairs budget and staff; and other support as required. In partnership with the Zone Medical Director, the Director is responsible for local zone strategy and will participate in provincial policy and strategy development.
The Director will work closely with members of the Calgary Zone leadership team, both medical and operational. The Director will foster positive relationships with the zone medical staff, with a focus on fostering effective, meaningful physician involvement in health system planning and decision making. A close and collaborative working relationship with the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary is essential to the success of this role, including an understanding of the structure of clinical/academic departments and the ability to oversee major initiatives, such as the Academic Alternate Relationship Programs. Other key external partners include Alberta Health, the Alberta Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. The Director will have approximately ten direct reports, and oversight of more than 600 AHS staff. The budget responsibility, both operational and restricted, is over $150 million. A proven record in staff and budget management is required. Among the Director’s strengths will be: excellent communication skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships over multiple sites; a strong sense of initiative and self-directed drive; solid project management skills, in particular: effective delegation, efficient coordination of work, appropriate consultation, and adherence to deadlines; the ability to translate guidelines and principles into local operational processes, including the ability to confidently lead and support front line staff through change; strong financial management abilities. Qualifications: | |
– Undergraduate degree in healthcare management, business administration or a related healthcare field.
– Minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience, ideally within a diverse health care organization with significant involvement with physicians. – Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. |
