Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) will provide “on-site” medical care as required by Alberta Health Services, Occupational Health and Safety, and the Alberta College of Paramedics. This position will be responsible for the application of accepted principles of treatment to sustain life, prevent medical injuries or illnesses from becoming worse and promoting recovery using available equipment, supplies, facilities, and services to provide immediate pre-hospital care to the ill or injured.
This position will report to the appropriate APL DIvisional (Industrial) Supervisor or designate and will be closely monitored by higher trained practitioners such as an Emergency Medical Technician – Ambulance (EMT-A), Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Assistant (PA), or Emergency Medical Technologist – Paramedic (EMT-P).
Shift rotations will vary depending on project length and scope and may be offered in a casual or full-time capacity.
Responsibilities:
- Assess the extent of injuries or illness to determine medical treatment
- Comfort and reassure patients
- Obtain the patient’s medical history
- Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as taking vital signs and testing glucose levels
- Administer a pre-hospital emergency care including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), oxygen, bandaging, splinting, assisting in child birth, and the treatment of trauma patients
- Use a semi-automatic or automatic external defibillator or bag valve mask resuscitator
- Use a spinal immobilization devices and traction splints
- Transport patients to hospital or other medical facilities for further care
- Document and record the nature of injuries and treatment provided
- Assist hospital personnel as required
- Maintain ambulances, mobile treatment centers, and other emergency fleet vehicles
- Ensure emergency fleet vehicles are properly equipped and are fully supplied

Education & Experience:
- Successfully completed training as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) from an approved program
- Registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics
- Experience working in the emergency medical services field
