In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Provides education, support, and clinical direction to the professional staff of Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of BC. The Lactation Consultant provides education, support and assistance to expectant and breastfeeding mothers.

Example of Duties & Accountabilities

    • Advises and teaches the professional nursing staff about clinical practice and education for lactation and breastfeeding.
    • Oversees the care provided to expectant women antepartum for breastfeeding and the initiation of lactation for postpartum women by promoting consistency and continuity of care.
    • Provides ongoing outpatient breastfeeding support to women and their families at the BC Women’s outpatient clinic with written notification to physicians and health care providers as appropriate.
    • Collaborates with multidisciplinary professionals in the hospital and in the community to provide care to breastfeeding families by referring breastfeeding mothers to appropriate medical and/or community resources.
    • Teaches and orientates new nursing employees as well as other health care providers such as medical students and nursing students regarding lactation and breastfeeding.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

    • Baccalaureate in Nursing and three years’ recent clinical experience in Maternal Child Health or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
    • Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC).
    • Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Certification.
    • Current CPR/Newborn Resuscitation Certification.

    • Ability to teach clients and professionals.
    • Ability to deal with others effectively.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
    • Ability to organize work.
