Selkirk Mental Health Centre is currently looking to recruit general physicians for employment at the centre. Hours of work for this position entails a 36.25 hour work week, Monday to Friday witn no after hours call. Benefits include paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, 10 paid statutory holidays and 8 paid days to attend continuing medical education per year, and extended health coverage. In addition, employees contribute to a Manitoba government defined benefit pension plan. The Manitoba government has a comprehensive benefits package which includes extended health care, health spending account, dental care, vision care, long-term disability insurance, group life insurance, maternity/paternity leave, family related leave, and a defined pension plan (some pension plans allow for portability between the Civil Service Superannuation Board and employers).
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Licensure in good standing by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and certification in family medicine with the Canadian College of Family Physicians.

Qualifications:

Essential:
  • Experience in family medicine or certification from the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP).
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and neurology.
  • The ability to accurately and appropriately assess patients.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate medical treatments, and to communicate the treatments to patients’ families, staff, medical and other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for the purpose of developing rapport, trust and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients, colleagues and family members.
  • The ability to participate effectively and appropriately as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Excellent written communication skills for the purpose of preparing reports, referral letters, discharge summaries, directives and memos.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for the purpose of effectively presenting complex, controversial or sensitive information to various stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to effectively deal with patient care loads, deadlines and competing demands.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
Desired:
  • Experience using Microsoft Office.
  • Experience using clinical information management systems (e.g. electronic patient chart).

Duties:

The physician is responsible for providing continuing, comprehensive medical care to inpatients at SMHC. The position provides an opportunity for the physician to work independently providing medical care to assigned patients. The physician works with a team of psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, nursing assistants and allied health staff.
