Shell is currently seeking an Occupational Health Physician to join our Occupational Health team at our Albian Sands location located north of Fort McMurray, AB.  The Occupational Health Physician provides health leadership and clinical support to Health Manager – Canada, to Shell Group companies in Canada, and particularly Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP, consisting on site health services at Albian Sands & Scotford Upgrader). The physician is the chief back-up position for Health Manager – Canada; and leads / develops teams of admins / techs, RNs, NPs/PAs.

A day in the life of a Shell Occupational Health Physician:

  • Provide leadership & operational advice to AOSP business leaders, HR and HSE partners.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, development and support to Albian & Scotford based Shell Health Canada staff.
  • Provide occupational medicine services & technical support to all Shell business units in Canada (particularly AOSP) to enable them to meet the health management standards of the HSSE Control Framework.
  • Conduct / assist / assure quality assessment of employees as appropriate for:
  • Pre-placement & periodic medical fitness to work & medical surveillance protocols
  • Occupational illness/injury management
  • Limited emergency and urgent care for non-occupational conditions
  • Medical case management of individuals on short term disability
  • Determine medical fitness for work, & as appropriate, make recommendations on rehabilitation through appropriate health management, work limitations / job accommodations, & modified work programs for safe & timely re-entry to the workforce.
  • Manage and lead health care professional staff (RNs, NP’s / PA’s +/- ERT members) and provide oversight with assessment / management of acute occupational injury/illness cases.
  • Advise HSE & line with occupational injury / illness incident classification, investigation & reporting, as well as other legally required recording & reporting.
  • Assist with medical directives, standing orders & treatment protocols for ill / injured workers at the job site for patient care to be provided in the absence of a physician.
  • Back-up to Country Health Manager especially for emergency response purposes.
  • Provide interpretation of & advice on health related policies, procedures and/or statutory requirements to management, client groups, line personnel & employees.
  • Assist with management of emerging health legislation & other health issues


Please note:  This role is a Regular Full time position based at Albian Sands North of Fort McMurray.  This role is eligible for the Fly-in / Fly-out (based out of Calgary or Edmonton), if the successful candidate does not prefer to relocate to Fort McMurray, AB. The position is a 4 / 3 schedule; Monday to Thursday (10 hours day).

We are looking for someone with the following Skills, Experiences and Qualifications:

  • You must be legally entitled to work in Canada by way of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or a valid work permit. This would authorize you to work for Shell in the occupation for which you are applying and provide confirmation and proof of status if an offer is advanced.
  • Must possess a Medical Doctor (M.D.) Degree and be licensed (or able to immediately obtain licence) on general register for independent practice.
  • Specialized training in Occupational Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and/or Community / Preventive Medicine.
  • Certification by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and/or Certification by the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine (CCBOM) or equivalent, or Family Medicine with strong interest / background in occupational medicine.
  • 2+ years of occupational medicine experience, preferably in private industry.
  • Oil and gas industry experience is a strong asset.
