This position is focused on communicable disease prevention and control with a primary focus on including tuberculosis and sexually-transmitted and blood-borne virus infections but as well enteric, zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, respiratory infections and related public health surveillance and control activities.

Although this position does not comprehensively focus on immunization and vaccine preventable diseases, these dimensions are included in a number of infectious diseases within this portfolio, e.g. influenza, hepatitis A and B.

Key Responsibilities The position will be part of the physician complement within Communicable Disease and Emergency Preparedness/Response (CDEPR) and will report to the Medical Director, Communicable Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC). This position will work in a collaborative manner with other physician and scientist positions within CDEPR and will work as a specialist support and collaborator with the operational director, managers and staff of the CDPC Program.

As such, the key responsibilities of this position are the following:
• Provide specialized advice and contribute field relevant and practice-based expertise to CDEPR, particularly in reference to providing advice to public health partners. An important part of these functions are made concrete through scientific support to the Provincial Infectious Disease Advisory Committee- Communicable Disease.
• Provide specialized input to ongoing infectious disease surveillance activities and provide scientific leadership to the investigation and control of communicable disease outbreaks when PHO input is expected/requested.
• Contribute to the planning and implementation of CDEPR initiatives, including providing oversight for selected CDEPR-led projects.
• Support the Director in ensuring that the scientific and technical advice provided to public health partners is of the highest quality (including ensuring public health partner relevance).
• Provide specialist support, collaboration and mentoring for the operational director, managers and staff of the CDPC Program.
• Participate in CDEPR scientific studies, as collaborator, co-investigator or principal investigator based on experience, skills and team complement.
• Take a lead role in the scientific contributions to ongoing updates/revisions to the Ontario Public Health Standards and the relevant communicable/infectious disease protocols and guidance documents.
• Supervise and mentor Public Health and Preventive Medicine residents and other trainees as required.
• As required, this position will also represent PHO, promoting our mandate and strategic initiatives through presentations at meetings, conferences and other activities. In so doing, the position will serve as a bridge to enhance connections between the CDEPR Department and public health partners.

This position will provide the successful candidate with valuable personal and professional development. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience at the provincial agency level.

Education and Experience • Fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine preferred.
• Other suitably qualified physicians with post graduate training in public health will also be considered.
• Must be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario or eligible for licensure in Ontario.
• Local public health experience (minimum of 5 years) in communicable disease investigation and control, including outbreak investigations and control, is a prerequisite.
• It is expected that the successful candidate will obtain an academic appointment at an appropriate university.
