Job Description

Thoracic Surgeon

The Division of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, is accepting applications for the position of an Academic Thoracic Surgeon with advanced training or experience in lung transplantation and ECMO. The Division of Thoracic Surgery presently consists of 5 thoracic surgeons and performs the full range of thoracic operations with a strong focus on minimally invasive pulmonary, mediastinal and foregut procedures. The University of Alberta is a major transplantation centre for Western Canada performing approximately 50-60 lung transplantations annually. The Division is located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, which combines state of the art clinical facilities with outstanding opportunities in both clinical and basic science research.

The Division is recruiting an academic thoracic surgeon at the Assistant Professor rank to start July 1, 2016, although this date is flexible. The successful applicant will have a job description which includes a significant commitment to establish a basic science research laboratory in a field relevant to lung failure; with the clinical component to include a full range of thoracic surgery including lung transplantation, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation and minimally invasive thoracic procedures. Protected time for research and start-up support for a laboratory will be provided. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the teaching of medical students and residents.

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent with completed training in Thoracic Surgery and must be eligible for College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta licensure. The applicant must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery or equivalent and have advanced training or significant experience in ECMO and lung transplantation. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a PhD designation with a distinguished record of research achievement in a basic science field relevant to lung failure and ex-vivo lung preservation. The successful applicant will be expected to apply for external funding from granting agencies. The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and includes a comprehensive benefits program.
